Question 1

Understand what a maritime declaration is for dangerous goods shipped by sea. This critical document must be submitted to the Maritime Safety Administration before cargo enters port for loading. Exemptions apply.

Accepted Answer

For dangerous goods by sea, the declaration of dangerous goods carried by ship must be completed before the cargo enters the port, with the full documentation submitted to the Maritime Safety Administration; without it the cargo cannot be loaded. Goods exempt under Special Provision 188 generally do not require a maritime DG declaration.

Question 2

Understand essential requirements for supervising dangerous goods loading, including complete declarations, IMDG Code segregation, marking verification, and compliance with terminal controls.

Accepted Answer

Complete dangerous goods declaration documents are required, and segregation must follow the IMDG Code strictly. Dangerous goods markings and packaging must be verified; loading supervisors must be familiar with dangerous goods operations; stowage next to incompatible cargo is prohibited; and operations must comply with the terminal's dangerous goods controls.

Question 3

Understand ocean shipping risks for generators and transformers, including wave movement and corrosion. Mitigate risks with proper sealing, under-deck stowage, and cargo insurance.

Accepted Answer

The risks in ocean transit are wave-induced movement and corrosion from humid, salt-laden air. Equipment must be sealed against water in advance, under-deck stowage should be requested wherever possible to improve safety, and insurance is recommended for high-value cargo.

Question 4

Learn essential tips for safely loading engineering heavy cargo like generators & transformers. Emphasizes center-of-gravity, secure stowing, and vital photo/video documentation for insurance & handover.

Accepted Answer

Lifting must follow the equipment's centre-of-gravity points strictly, and the cargo should preferably be stowed in the hold and secured. Photograph and video the lifting, positioning and securing throughout. Such imagery is valid evidence for insurance claims and for handover verification at the destination port, making it easier to allocate responsibility if damage occurs and reducing handover disputes.

Question 5

Discover why generator set lifting operations frequently stall at African ports due to weak infrastructure and how tailored planning and heavy-lift vessels can ensure smooth deliveries.

Accepted Answer

Most African destination ports have weak infrastructure: cramped working areas, cranes of insufficient capacity, a shortage of skilled operators and inconsistent operating standards. Standard heavy-cargo plans do not fit local conditions, which readily leads to cranes being unable to take the load, no space to set the cargo down, stalled loading and discharge, and very low productivity, and even to safety problems such as impact damage during lifting or tilting on landing. The targeted solution: before shipment, verify the destination port's equipment specifications, site conditions and heavy-cargo operating standards, and tailor the loading, lifting and landing plan to actual local conditions. Where necessary, deploy a vessel with its own heavy-lift gear so as to remove dependence on port equipment and ensure the operation goes smoothly at the destination.
