The Complete Guide to Air Freight Logistics: Advantages, Suitable Scenarios

Air Freight Solutions

1. What Is Air Freight Logistics?

Air freight, that is air cargo, uses civil aviation aircraft as the carrier to complete cross-border cargo transportation, and is a mainstream cross-border logistics solution for time-critical requirements. Unlike FCL (full-container-load) and LCL (less-than-container-load) ocean freight with their long turnaround cycles, or land transport restricted by geography, air freight relies on the global aviation hub network to achieve rapid cargo movement, standardised operational flows and high port customs clearance efficiency.

Mainstream air freight modes are divided into: belly-hold air freight on commercial passenger aircraft, consolidated air freight, and full-charter air freight. Depending on cargo volume and transit time requirements, you can choose economy general-cargo air freight, expedited air freight, or a dedicated charter solution, matching diversified shipping needs.

2. Cargo Suitable and Unsuitable for Air Freight

Cargo Suitable for Air Freight

  • Time-critical cargo: urgent replenishment orders, overseas exhibition samples under an ATA Carnet, repair and replacement goods, temporary rush orders
  • High-value precision cargo: electronic components, precision instruments, medical equipment, luxury goods, high-end hardware fittings
  • Light, small cross-border shipments: small parcels for cross-border e-commerce, samples for individual traders, small-batch trial orders
  • Emergency supplies: epidemic prevention materials, emergency materials, fresh and perishable goods, time-sensitive industrial consumables

Scenarios Where Air Freight Is Not Recommended

  • Oversized, over-weight and low-value bulk cargo: air freight has a high unit cost and poor cost-effectiveness, so OOG (out-of-gauge) special container and break-bulk heavy-lift ocean freight solutions should be evaluated first
  • Dangerous goods such as flammable, explosive and corrosive items: these are categories restricted or prohibited for air transport; if air freight is required, a full set of compliance testing documents and IMDG dangerous goods declaration documents must be provided, and most categories are prohibited from air transport.
  • Voluminous low-density cargo: the volumetric weight is large, and air freight charges will rise significantly

Practical note: air freight applies the W/M charging rule, billing on the greater of the actual gross weight and the volumetric weight; low-density cargo is charged according to volumetric weight. For smaller document and sample shipments, an international express solution can also be considered.

3. Core Advantages of Air Freight Logistics

3.1 Superior Time Efficiency for Rapid Cross-Border Delivery

Air freight is the preferred choice for speed in cross-border logistics. On mature trunk routes, cross-border movement can be completed within 24–72 hours (excluding destination customs clearance and final-mile delivery), quickly handling business scenarios such as urgent replenishment, sample delivery and overdue orders, shortening the trade cycle and accelerating cash flow.

3.2 Better Safety with a Low Cargo Damage Rate

Air cargo operations are strictly standardised, with fewer transshipment stages and less manual handling than ocean freight. Precision and high-value cargo is less likely to suffer impact damage, moisture or contamination. Aviation security control is strict, so the risk of cargo loss is relatively manageable. For high-value cargo, we recommend planning cargo insurance cover.

3.3 Extensive Route Network Coverage

Backed by global aviation hubs, the route network covers the vast majority of countries and regions worldwide, with dense flight frequencies. It is not directly affected by issues such as ocean port congestion or route transshipment delays.

3.4 Mature Port Customs Clearance Support

Airport ports have a high degree of intelligent customs clearance and efficient inspection and release. Together with the supporting services of a professional logistics provider, this shortens the time cargo is held at the port and speeds up final-mile delivery.

3.5 Flexible Solutions for Different Cargo Volumes

From samples of just a few kilograms to bulk cargo of several tonnes, requirements can be matched through consolidation, locked pallet space or full charters, balancing small-batch rush orders and large-volume emergency shipments.

4. Key Limitations and Inherent Operational Risks

Air freight is not a universal solution; before selecting it, you need to recognise the objective constraints:

  1. High unit transport cost: the greater the weight or volume, the more significantly air freight costs exceed ocean freight; heavy cargo and low-value bulk cargo are not suitable for air freight. For oversized equipment, please evaluate the ocean freight option under a one-stop project cargo logistics solution.
  2. Strictly regulated by aviation rules: special cargo such as items with batteries, lithium batteries, magnetic materials, liquids and powders must be supported by compliance test reports such as UN38.3; we only carry out a preliminary document review, and the airline holds the final decision on whether to accept the cargo, so 100% acceptance cannot be guaranteed; please refer to the IMDG dangerous goods declaration regulations for details.

  1. Transit time is variable: the 24-72 hours refers only to the in-flight movement time on trunk routes; it does not include export customs declaration at the origin port, destination customs clearance or final-mile delivery; in the event of flight cancellations, air traffic flow control or customs inspection, the overall transit time will be delayed.
  2. Inspection risk also applies: customs inspection may be triggered at both the origin airport and the destination airport, causing delays and additional costs.
  3. High cost threshold for charters: a full-charter solution is expensive and only suitable for large-volume, extremely urgent projects.

5. Bloom Supply Chain Professional Air Freight Services

Bloom Supply Chain has deep experience in international air freight, connects with the resources of multiple mainstream airlines and has built a global air freight network, providing corporate clients with one-stop air freight solutions while controlling cargo safety and delivery time.

5.1 Global Full-Coverage Air Freight Route Network

Through deep cooperation with mainstream airlines, the route network covers core global regions including Southeast Asia, Europe and the Americas, the Middle East, Africa and Australia, and stable space can be locked in to support general cargo shipments. For special cargo such as items with batteries, we provide a preliminary document review, and the airline decides whether to accept the cargo. Our business covers small samples, bulk shipments and urgent charter projects.

5.2 One-Stop, Full-Chain Air Freight Services

We offer multiple delivery modes: door-to-door, port-to-door, port-to-port and door-to-port.

Services include: pickup at origin, documentation preparation, export customs declaration, air transport, coordination of destination customs clearance, and final-mile delivery.

Important note: warehousing, special shock-proof and moisture-proof reinforced packaging, and dedicated declaration handling for battery-powered or special cargo are value-added services and are not included in the base quotation by default.

5.3 Dedicated Protection for Special Cargo (Value-Added Service)

For precision instruments, fragile items, high-value goods and battery-powered products, we can provide dedicated shock-proof, moisture-proof and compression-resistant packaging reinforcement solutions that strictly follow air cargo regulations, reducing the risk of transport damage.

5.4 Transparent Quotations and End-to-End Visual Tracking

Air freight quotations are itemised, clear and transparent. Throughout the shipment, milestone updates are synchronised across every node — pickup, warehouse in-take, aircraft loading, take-off, landing, customs clearance and delivery; the project team responds quickly to all kinds of unexpected situations.

5.5 Tiered, Customised Transit-Time Solutions

We distinguish between economy air freight, standard air freight, expedited air freight and charter solutions, balancing transit time requirements with the project budget and matching both regular orders and urgent shipment needs.

Air freight suits rush orders, samples and high-value small-piece cargo where speed is the priority. Bloom Supply Chain will take into account your cargo volume, cargo characteristics and required delivery time, help you compare air freight with FCL (full-container-load), LCL (less-than-container-load), OOG (out-of-gauge) special container and break-bulk heavy-lift ocean freight modes, and recommend the optimal solution.
